(Arnica Montana) Arnica is a stimulant and direutic. It is seldom used internally because of its irritating effect on the stomach. A tincture or balm of arnica is used externally on unbroken skin for sprains, bruises, and wounds. The tincture may also be used in a foot bath of hot water to sooth tender feet and applied to the scalp it will make the hair grow.
Great care should be taken when using arnica, as some people are particularly sensitive this plant.
Herb Infused Oil
Herb infused oils can be used as skin or massage oils or ingredients in salves, balms and more. Pack a small jar about 3/4 full with herbs, pour in extra virgin olive oil taking care to completely submerge the herbs. Remove all the air bubbles then cap the jar tightly. Place in a warm, sunny window for at least two weeks and try to shake the oils daily. Strain through several layers of cheesecloth into a clean jar and store in a cool, dark place. Alternatively, you can use a very clean crockpot. Place herbs and oil in pot and simmer on low for 4 to 6 hours or more. (http://www.gaianvoices.com)
Healing Salve
Over very low heat, gently warm 1/2 cup of arnica oil or a mixture of arnica and other herb oils in a glass or stainless steel pot (or use a double boiler). Add 2 to 3 TBS beeswax. Stir until beeswax is melted then remove from heat. Add a few drops of essential oil if desired. Pour into jars. The salve will set as it cools.
